Sun Mobility Achieves Groundbreaking Ais-038 Certification for Swappable EV Batteries

admin March 30, 2026

Setting a New Standard in India

SUN Mobility has made headlines by securing India’s first AIS-038 certification for its innovative swappable electric vehicle (EV) battery platform. This milestone was granted by the Automotive Research Association of India (ARAI) on March 26, 2026, at their facility in Chakan. The AIS-038 standard outlines crucial safety and performance requirements for EV batteries in India, marking a pivotal moment for the nation’s electrification journey.

The certified platform operates within the 660V high-voltage category and comes in two primary variants: 50 kWh and 100 kWh. This modular design is OEM-agnostic, allowing seamless integration into existing and new vehicle models, including trucks and buses of various sizes. Such flexibility is vital for operators looking to retrofit their fleets with advanced battery technology.

Company’s Legacy of Innovation

Founded in 2019, SUN Mobility has been at the forefront of swappable battery technology, beginning with its system designed specifically for buses. The company has since built an impressive portfolio of over 160 intellectual properties, with more than 40 patents granted. This indigenous development not only showcases India’s potential in EV innovation but also emphasizes the capability to meet stringent global safety standards.

To date, SUN Mobility has facilitated over 35 million battery swaps and enabled the completion of more than one billion electric kilometers. This achievement translates to a significant reduction of over 70,000 metric tonnes of CO₂ emissions, underscoring the company’s commitment to sustainable mobility solutions. According to EV Mechanica, this operational scale is a testament to the effectiveness of their technology.

Revolutionizing Commercial Vehicle Electrification

The new certification is set to address key challenges in the heavy commercial vehicle segment, such as vehicle downtime and range anxiety. With the swappable battery platform, fleet operators can customize battery capacity based on their specific operational needs, mitigating dependence on fixed battery sizes. SUN Mobility’s CEO, Ashok Agarwal, emphasized that swap-enabled heavy electric vehicles are crucial for elevating EV adoption from niche markets to mainstream acceptance.

Moreover, CTO Naveen Chopra highlighted that the AIS-038 certification validates their engineering prowess and the scalability of their modular solutions. This strategic move positions SUN Mobility as a leader in the EV space, setting a precedent for future innovations in battery technology.

Implications for the Indian EV Ecosystem

Achieving this certification represents a significant inflection point for India’s commercial EV ecosystem, furthering the vision of Aatmanirbhar Bharat or self-reliant India. The validation of the AIS-038 standard confirms the platform’s safety, reliability, and performance for commercial applications after rigorous testing by ARAI. This development not only paves the way for more widespread adoption of swappable battery systems but also diminishes previous barriers faced by fleet operators.

As noted by GaadiKey, this first-mover advantage establishes a regulatory framework for future innovations in India’s heavy commercial vehicle segment. With such advancements, the country is poised to take significant strides in transforming its transportation landscape.
