SAIC-Volkswagen is gearing up to redefine the plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) segment with its upcoming Passat ePro, planned for a 2026 release in China. Unveiled at the Guangzhou Auto Show, this sedan promises an impressive combined range of 1,300 km, showcasing the brand’s commitment to advancing hybrid technology.
Design and Dimensions
The Passat ePro stands out with its sleek silhouette, measuring 5017 mm in length, 1850 mm in width, and 1489 mm in height, complemented by a wheelbase of 2871 mm. Its design features include:
- ‘Tech Smart Eye’ LED headlights
- Through-type LED light strips
- Illuminated logos
- ‘Wing-spread’ LED taillights
Customers will have the option to choose between 17-inch or 18-inch wheels, further personalizing their ride.
Powertrain and Performance
Under the hood, the Passat ePro is equipped with an EA211 1.5T EVO II hybrid-specific engine delivering 95 kW. Coupled with a 145 kW (194 hp) electric motor and a 22 kWh battery pack from Sunwoda, this setup allows the ePro to achieve a pure electric range exceeding 150 km. The combined efficiency illustrates Volkswagen’s strategic push towards sustainable mobility in China.
Market Context and Strategic Importance
The Passat ePro marks a significant milestone as the first hybrid within the rebranded Passat Pro lineup, which transitioned in September 2024. With 187,807 units sold from January to October 2025, the Passat remains a top contender in the mid-size market, highlighting its solid performance amid rising competition in the electrified vehicle sector.
This model is pivotal in Volkswagen’s five-year strategy to enhance its presence in China’s rapidly evolving electric vehicle market. The introduction of PHEVs like the Passat ePro will help the brand compete against domestic new energy vehicles (NEVs) as the country shifts towards lower emission transport solutions.
As noted by Car News China, the ‘e’ in ePro symbolizes an “electric-driven experience” aimed at delivering both performance and efficiency. This strategic direction not only aligns with consumer demand but also enhances Volkswagen’s competitive edge in a market increasingly dominated by electrification.
