Milestone Achieved: Full Electrification of Single-Decker Fleet

Nottingham City Transport (NCT) has successfully completed the electrification of its entire single-decker bus fleet. This ambitious initiative saw the deployment of 62 Yutong electric buses across critical city routes, highlighted by the recent addition of the final 14 buses to the Grey Line 53 and 54, serving key areas including Arnold, City Hospital, and Clifton. This transition to zero-emission operations was accomplished in just 18 months, showcasing NCT’s commitment to sustainable public transport.

Funding and Future Plans

The rollout was made possible through significant financial backing, with £12.3 million from the UK’s Zero Emission Bus Regional Areas (ZEBRA) Fund and an additional £17.7 million from NCT itself. Looking ahead, NCT is not resting on its laurels; plans are already in motion to electrify its double-decker fleet. The operator has ordered 13 Yutong U11DD electric double-decker buses, set to enter service in late 2026, backed by £4.5 million from the East Midlands Combined Authority.

Innovative Collaboration with Yutong

The electric buses, manufactured by China’s Yutong, have been customized to meet NCT’s specifications by Pelican Engineering in Yorkshire. Feedback from passengers and drivers has been overwhelmingly positive, highlighting the reliability and efficiency of these zero-emission vehicles. David Astill, Managing Director of NCT, emphasized the significance of this rollout as a key step toward achieving a fully zero-emission fleet.
