India’s Utility Vehicles Dominate Auto Exports, Leaving Cars in the Dust

admin December 22, 2025

Record-Breaking Exports Fuelled by UV Demand

India’s auto exports have hit unprecedented levels, with 31.43 lakh units shipped between April and September 2025. This surge represents a remarkable 24.3% increase compared to the previous year. A significant driver of this growth is the booming demand for utility vehicles (UVs), which have outperformed traditional passenger cars in export numbers. According to reports, UV exports surged by 26% to reach 2,11,373 units, while passenger car exports grew by just 11.8% to 2,29,281 units.

The Rise of UVs in India

Utility vehicles in India encompass a range of vehicles including SUVs, crossovers, and MPVs tailored for versatility and rugged use. With a commanding 66% share of the domestic passenger vehicle market, UVs have become the preferred choice for consumers seeking higher ground clearance and premium features. Major players like Maruti Suzuki, Mahindra, and Tata dominate this segment, focusing on affordability and fuel efficiency.

Key Players and Their Contributions

Maruti Suzuki continues to lead the charge with a staggering 2,05,763 passenger vehicle exports in the first half of FY26, reflecting a robust 40% year-on-year increase. Following closely are Hyundai, Volkswagen with 28,011 units, and Toyota with 18,880 units. These manufacturers leverage cost-effective production methods and popular models like the Baleno and Verna to boost their export figures. Meanwhile, UV specialists like Mahindra and Tata are pushing the envelope with designs that resonate with international markets.

Global Demand and Market Dynamics

The primary export markets for Indian UVs include regions such as the Middle East, Latin America (notably Mexico and Brazil), Africa, and parts of Asia and Europe. The demand for affordable and durable UVs is driven by a global shift towards SUVs, with Indian manufacturers capitalizing on competitive pricing. Exports to over 24 countries showcase India’s expanding footprint in the automotive sector.

Future Trends and Implications

The soaring exports of UVs indicate a broader market transition from sedans to SUVs, both domestically and globally. With total exports nearing the FY24 record at 599,276 units as of November 2025, the outlook remains optimistic despite challenges like potential tariffs and increasing competition. As the automotive landscape shifts, India is poised to become a pivotal player in the global auto market, particularly in the burgeoning EV sector.
