Great Wall Motor Unveils Retro-Inspired Model, Teases New Brand Expansion

admin December 19, 2025

Great Wall Motor (GWM) is gearing up for a significant shift in its automotive lineup, hinting at both a new retro-inspired model and the launch of a sixth brand. This move signals an ambitious strategy to expand its market reach, targeting higher-end consumers while diversifying its offerings.

Design and Features of the New Model

The teasers, shared by GWM’s Chief Engineer, Li Fei, showcase a vehicle that departs from the company’s established SUV-centric design. The new model features:

  • A rounded, elongated body with distinct retro aesthetics.
  • A prominent chrome rear bumper that adds a vintage flair.
  • A unique badge with a long string of letters, signaling its standalone identity.

Li emphasized that this model represents a “completely new product series,” which diverges from GWM’s existing brands like Haval, Tank, and Wey. Instead, it aims to evoke nostalgia while integrating modern technology.

Strategic Expansion into Premium Markets

GWM’s move aligns with its recent focus on premium vehicles. In early 2025, the company established an “Ultra Luxury Vehicle Business Group,” targeting a segment that includes vehicles priced over 1 million yuan (approximately $142,000). This strategy is underscored by impressive sales figures, with GWM reporting a year-on-year increase of 4.57% in November alone, totaling 133,200 vehicles sold.

This expansion is not just about numbers; it’s a clear indication of GWM’s intent to compete in higher price brackets, aiming to capture both domestic and international markets that value heritage and luxury.

Market Implications and Competitive Landscape

Should GWM successfully launch this retro-inspired brand, it will carve out a niche that combines lifestyle appeal with premium pricing. The move comes as Chinese manufacturers, including BYD and NIO, aggressively diversify their portfolios. With Western brands still holding strong emotional connections with consumers, GWM’s challenge will be to deliver authentic designs and high-quality builds that resonate with buyers.

As industry trends shift towards premiumization, GWM’s retro model could not only attract nostalgic enthusiasts but also position the brand as a serious contender in the luxury automotive space. The success of this venture will hinge on effective brand storytelling and market execution, ensuring that consumer interest translates into sales.
