Factorial and Posco Partner on Solid-State Batteries
High-Voltage Alliance Targets Next-Gen EV Power
In a move that could redefine electric vehicle performance benchmarks, U.S.-based solid-state battery innovator Factorial Inc. has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with South Korea’s POSCO Future M to co-develop advanced materials for all-solid-state batteries. The agreement, announced at the Future Battery Forum in Berlin, aims to fuse Factorial’s cutting-edge cell design expertise with POSCO Future M’s deep experience in cathode and anode materials.
According to BusinessWire, the partnership is non-binding for now, but sets the stage for commercial contracts that could accelerate the deployment of next-gen batteries in EVs, robotics, and stationary energy storage.
Why Solid-State Batteries Matter
All-solid-state batteries replace the liquid electrolytes found in conventional lithium-ion packs with solid materials. This fundamental shift offers:
- Higher energy density – more range without increasing battery size.
- Improved safety – reduced fire risk and no electrolyte leakage.
- Faster charging – potentially slashing charge times dramatically.
Factorial’s FEST (Factorial Electrolyte System Technology) platform has already yielded prototype cells for automotive partners, while POSCO Future M is pushing forward on silicon anodes and sulfide-based solid electrolytes—materials seen as critical to unlocking the full potential of solid-state designs.
Proof of Concept: Mercedes-Benz EQS Long-Haul Test
Real-world validation came in August when a Mercedes-Benz EQS test vehicle, equipped with Factorial’s solid-state battery, drove 1,205 km from Stuttgart to Malmö without stopping to recharge, arriving with 137 km still in reserve. For comparison, the WLTP-rated maximum range for a standard EQS is up to 816 km, meaning a conventional pack would likely require one or two charging stops for the same journey.
This kind of performance is exactly why automakers like Mercedes-Benz and Stellantis have already secured partnerships with Factorial. Stellantis plans to roll out a demonstration fleet of the Dodge Charger Daytona with solid-state power in 2026.
Strategic Industry Impact
POSCO Future M’s existing relationships with battery giants like LG Energy Solution, SK On, and Samsung SDI position it as a heavyweight in the supply chain. By joining forces with Factorial, the duo aims to:
- Accelerate breakthroughs in cathode and anode material science.
- Strengthen supply chain resilience against geopolitical and market volatility.
- Drive down per-kWh costs to enable mass-market adoption.

If they succeed, the payoff for EV drivers could be transformative: longer range, quicker charging, and a leap forward in safety—all at a price point competitive with today’s lithium-ion systems.
