EnBW Expands Fast-Charging Infrastructure With Xcharge Field Tests
The Launch of XCharge Testing
EnBW, Germany’s largest operator of fast-charging stations, has initiated field tests of its new XCharge stations, enhancing its existing HyperNetz network. This move includes the deployment of ten XCharge C7 Ultra-Fast Chargers across key locations such as Rutesheim, Stuttgart, Durlach Centre in Karlsruhe, and the Karlsruhe Railway Station. These sites complement the already operational Alpitronic Hyperchargers, allowing EnBW to gather crucial data on performance and reliability under real-world conditions.
Powerful Specifications for Rapid Charging
The XCharge C7, capable of delivering up to 400 kW at a maximum of 600 A, positions itself as a formidable competitor in the fast-charging market. It features:
- Two CCS connectors for simultaneous charging
- A user-friendly touchscreen interface
- A compact, modular design for easy installation
- Optional liquid- or air-cooled cables for high-load flexibility
This technology promises significantly reduced charging times, with the potential to add up to 400 km of range in just 15 minutes.
Strategic Diversification Amid Supply Chain Challenges
Historically reliant on Alpitronic’s chargers, EnBW’s partnership with XCharge marks a strategic pivot towards diversifying its supplier base. Volker Rimpler, EnBW’s CTO for E-Mobility, emphasized the importance of this strategy in light of global supply chain uncertainties. The current tests, expanded from an initial installation in August 2025 to a broader deployment, aim to strengthen EnBW’s network resilience and reduce dependency on a single source.
XCharge’s European Ambitions
XCharge, though originally founded in China, has established its European operations in Hamburg and Austin. The company views this collaboration with EnBW as a critical step in solidifying its presence in the competitive European market, which is dominated by established players like Alpitronic, Siemens, and ABB. Albina Iljasov, XCharge’s Head of Europe, noted that success in the German market, known for its stringent standards, could enhance their reputation and facilitate further expansion.
