Major Milestone Achieved

BYD is making waves in the automotive industry with its Brazilian manufacturing plant securing an impressive 100,000 vehicle orders from Argentina and Mexico. Stella Li, Executive Vice President of BYD, announced this significant achievement during an event in Rio de Janeiro on March 13, 2026. The orders are split evenly, with 50,000 vehicles earmarked for each country, marking a pivotal moment for BYD as it strengthens its foothold in Latin America.

The Brazilian facility, located in Camaçari, officially commenced production on July 1, 2025. With an annual production capacity of 150,000 vehicles, BYD plans to expand this capability to 600,000 units in phases, catering to the growing demand for both plug-in hybrids and fully electric vehicles. The initial model rolling off the production line was the Dolphin Mini, also known as the Seagull.

Expanding Production and Investment

The Camaçari plant not only contributes to BYD’s export ambitions but also enhances its local production capabilities. The company is investing 300 million Brazilian reais (approximately $53 million USD) to establish a research center in Rio de Janeiro. This facility, expected to break ground in 2026, will focus on testing vehicle performance in tropical climates and adapting technologies for local markets, further solidifying BYD’s commitment to the region.

The production facility is designed to manufacture a variety of models, including the Dolphin Mini, BYD King, and Song Pro. This diverse lineup aims to cater to various consumer preferences while capitalizing on the increasing interest in electric mobility across South America.

Record Sales and Strategic Export Focus

BYD’s growth trajectory in Brazil is remarkable, with sales soaring to 76,713 vehicles registered in 2024, a staggering increase of 327.68% from the previous year. By 2025, total sales reached about 113,000 units, positioning Brazil as BYD’s largest market outside China. The recent order of 100,000 vehicles aligns with the company’s strategy to leverage Brazil as a regional hub for exports to Argentina, Mexico, and potentially beyond.

February’s export figures remained robust, exceeding 100,000 units even with traditional seasonal slowdowns. This reliance on international markets signals a strategic pivot as BYD adapts to intense competition in China. The Brazilian plant’s orders represent approximately 67% of its current annual capacity, emphasizing the importance of export markets in BYD’s overall strategy.
