Battery Smart Hits 100 Million Battery Swaps: a New Era for India’s EV Scene
Battery Smart, the innovative startup revolutionizing electric vehicle (EV) infrastructure in India, has achieved a significant milestone by surpassing 100 million battery swaps. This achievement marks a pivotal moment in the country’s transition to sustainable transportation, particularly for electric two- and three-wheelers.
Rapid Expansion and Innovative Model
Founded in 2019 by IIT Kanpur graduates Pulkit Khurana and Siddharth Sikka, Battery Smart launched its first battery swapping station in June 2020 in Janakpuri, New Delhi. Since then, the company has expanded its network to over 1,600 stations across more than 50 cities, serving over 90,000 drivers. This rapid growth underscores the increasing demand for efficient and accessible EV solutions in India.
The company’s unique business model allows users, particularly e-rickshaw and last-mile delivery operators, to exchange depleted lithium-ion batteries for fully charged ones in under two minutes. This process eliminates the long charging times of 8-10 hours, making EV adoption more practical and appealing. Battery Smart partners pay a licensing fee, while the company invests in the necessary infrastructure, ensuring that stations typically break even within a year. This model has been crucial for scaling operations efficiently and effectively.
Financial Growth and Market Impact
Battery Smart’s success is reflected in its impressive financial performance. The startup reported a revenue of Rs 250 crore for FY25, marking a 52% year-on-year growth. The number of daily battery swaps has also surged to over 100,000, showcasing the high demand for their services.
Moreover, the company has raised over ₹1,000 crores (approximately USD 116 million) primarily through debt financing, allowing it to scale without significant equity dilution. This unconventional approach has positioned Battery Smart as a rated entity capable of accessing public debt markets, further solidifying its financial foundation.
Addressing India’s EV Challenges
Battery Smart’s battery swapping solution addresses critical challenges facing India’s EV ecosystem, where the high upfront cost of batteries constitutes about 40% of total vehicle costs. The company not only reduces financial barriers but also mitigates the severe charging infrastructure deficit in India, which has five times fewer chargers per EV compared to global standards.
By promoting lithium-ion battery adoption over traditional lead-acid batteries, Battery Smart enhances performance and efficiency while significantly reducing downtime for drivers. This shift is essential for India’s ambitious goal of increasing electric mobility and reducing urban pollution.
