Ram Revives Dakota With Two Distinct Models for Different Markets

admin December 20, 2025

Ram’s return to the midsize pickup segment is official, as the brand confirms it will launch two different vehicles under the familiar Dakota name. This move marks a significant revival for the Dakota nameplate, which has been absent from the North American market since 2011.

The North American Dakota: Specifications and Expectations

According to MotorTrend, the new North American Dakota is set to enter production in 2027, with a debut planned for the 2028 model year. Built on a body-on-frame platform akin to the Ram 1500, this new model aims to compete head-to-head with rivals like the Ford Ranger and Toyota Tacoma.

  • Engine Options: Expected to feature turbocharged four- and six-cylinder engines.
  • Powertrain Variants: Gas, mild-hybrid, and plug-in hybrid options are anticipated.
  • Price Point: Starting around $40,000.
  • Manufacturing Location: Toledo, Ohio, alongside Jeep models, potentially creating up to 900 new jobs.

Ram CEO Tim Kuniskis emphasized the importance of this revival, signaling a strategic re-entry into the growing midsize market, which has seen a surge in demand for versatile and affordable alternatives to full-size trucks.

The South American Dakota: A Different Approach

In contrast to its North American counterpart, the Dakota introduced in South America is a restyled version of the Chinese Changan F70 pickup, launched in November 2025. This iteration is manufactured in Argentina and also marketed as the Ram 1200 in Mexico. Notably, it shares no design or components with the North American model, allowing for both Dakotas to be sold side-by-side without confusion in various markets.

This strategic naming practice is not unique to Ram. Similar approaches have been seen with models like the Nissan Frontier and the Ford Explorer, which also utilize different vehicles under the same name across regions.

Market Implications and Future Prospects

The reintroduction of the Dakota name signals Ram’s commitment to capitalizing on the booming midsize truck market, which has seen increased competition and consumer interest. With Stellantis investing heavily in U.S. production, this move not only aims to attract loyal customers but also to meet evolving consumer preferences for hybrid and electric powertrains.

The return of the Dakota could reshape the competitive landscape for midsize pickups, as Ram positions itself to challenge longstanding competitors while leveraging its heritage brand appeal. With production slated to begin soon, enthusiasts will be eagerly awaiting further details on performance and design.
