Chery’s new premium SUV brand, Lepas, is set to make waves in the UK market with the launch of its flagship model, the Lepas L8. Scheduled for release in the second half of 2026, this stylish mid-size SUV aims to take on popular models like the Kia Sportage and Hyundai Tucson.
A Design Inspired by Nature
The Lepas L8’s design draws inspiration from the agile and muscular form of a running leopard, aiming to evoke a sense of speed and elegance. Measuring approximately 4.688 meters in length, 1.860 meters in width, and 1.695 meters in height, with a generous 2,800mm wheelbase, the L8 promises ample interior space for families.
Key design features include:
- Sleek Daytime Running Lights: Slim and modern, enhancing its aggressive front profile.
- Unique Grille Design: Distinctive aesthetics set it apart from sibling models like the Chery Tiggo 9.
- Hidden LED Headlights: Strategically placed in the bumper, mimicking the focused gaze of a leopard.
- Full-Width Rear Lightbar: A contemporary touch that complements the SUV’s overall design.
Powertrain and Performance Features
The Lepas L8 will debut in the UK with a 1.5-litre turbocharged petrol plug-in hybrid (PHEV) powertrain. This setup combines a four-cylinder engine with an electric motor, delivering a total output between 204 and 255 bhp and a robust 525 Nm of torque. The vehicle features an 18.3 kWh lithium iron phosphate battery, providing an electric-only range of up to 95 km under WLTP testing.
Additional performance highlights include:
- Fuel Efficiency: An impressive 1.4L/100 km combined fuel economy.
- Fast Charging Capability: Supports 40 kW DC fast charging.
- Front-Wheel Drive: Standard configuration for enhanced handling and efficiency.
Market Positioning and Pricing
As the flagship model for Lepas, the L8 is strategically priced to appeal to value-conscious buyers, with expectations for a starting price below £30,000. This pricing strategy positions it as an attractive alternative to premium rivals, while still offering advanced technology and hybrid efficiency.
With a release targeted for Q3 2026, the Lepas L8 is set to enter a highly competitive market segment, challenging established players like the BYD Sealion 5 and MG HS. Its combination of stylish design, spacious interiors, and hybrid technology could make it a compelling choice for UK consumers.
