Karma Automotive has officially ceased production of the Revero, marking the end of a tumultuous chapter that began with the ill-fated Fisker Karma. This luxury extended-range electric vehicle (EREV), which aimed to blend eco-friendly technology with high-end design, has been a symbol of both innovation and struggle in the automotive industry.
From Fisker to Karma: A Rocky Journey
The Revero’s roots trace back to the Fisker Karma, launched in 2012. After producing approximately 2,667 units, Fisker Automotive faced bankruptcy in 2013, leading to the acquisition of its assets by Wanxiang Group. Under the new name, Karma Automotive revived the vehicle in 2016, featuring updated components but preserving much of Henrik Fisker’s original design.
Specifications and Performance
The Karma Revero showcased a cutting-edge plug-in hybrid powertrain that combined a 28 kWh lithium-ion battery with a BMW-sourced 1.5-liter turbocharged three-cylinder engine. This setup enabled:
- 536 horsepower and 550 lb-ft of torque
- Acceleration from 0-60 mph in just 4.5 seconds
- A total range of 360 miles, with up to 80 miles on electric power alone
- DC fast-charging capabilities, a rarity among hybrids
Despite its impressive specs, production fell short of expectations. Karma aimed for 3,000 units annually but struggled, averaging around 100 vehicles per year and totaling about 1,000 sold.
Challenges and Legacy
The Revero faced numerous challenges throughout its lifecycle, including a 2019 recall for faulty rollover sensors, which led to significant layoffs. Despite winning accolades, such as the 2018 Luxury Green Car of the Year, the brand could not overcome its low-volume luxury focus and financial difficulties.
Ultimately, Karma Automotive completed production of the last Revero in late 2025. The company now shifts its focus to new luxury EV models like the Gyesera and Kaveya super coupe, seeking to enhance performance and range while staying true to the EREV concept.
Implications for the Automotive Landscape
The demise of the Revero highlights the challenges faced by startups in the increasingly competitive electric vehicle market. Its legacy serves as a cautionary tale about the perils of low-volume production and the need for robust funding and market strategy in the evolving automotive industry. As Karma moves forward, the lessons learned from the Revero may inform their future endeavors in the luxury EV segment.
